¹Kral Dareios'un hükümdarlığının ikinci yılında, altıncı ayın birinci gününde, Rab'bin sözü peygamber Hagay'ın aracılığıyla bildirilerek geldi ve şöyle dedi: "Yahuda oymağından Şealtiel oğlu Zerubbabel'e ve Yehosadak oğlu Başkâhin Yeşu'ya söyle:

²Her Şeye Egemen Rab şöyle buyuruyor: Bu halk, 'Rab'bin tapınağını inşa etmenin uygun zamanı henüz gelmedi' diyor."

³Rab'bin sözü peygamber Hagay aracılığıyla bildirilerek tekrar geldi:

⁴"Bu tapınak harap bir haldeyken, sizin oyma tavanlı lüks evlerinizde oturmanızın sırası mıdır?

⁵Şimdi Her Şeye Egemen Rab şöyle buyuruyor: Yollarınızı ve davranışlarınızı yüreğinizde iyice tartın.

⁶Çok ektiniz ama az hasat ettiniz; yiyorsunuz ama doymuyorsunuz; içiyorsunuz ama sarhoş olamıyorsunuz; giyiniyorsunuz ama ısınamıyorsunuz; ücret alan kişi ise kazancını delik bir torbaya dolduruyor."

⁷Her Şeye Egemen Rab şöyle buyuruyor: "Yollarınızı ve davranışlarınızı yüreğinizde iyice tartın.

⁸Dağa çıkın, odun getirin ve tapınağı inşa edin; ben de ondan hoşnut kalayım ve orada yüceliğimi göstereyim, diyor Rab.

⁹Çok şey beklediniz ama az elde ettiniz; eve getirdiğinizi de ben bir üfleyişle yok ettim. Neden? diye buyuruyor Her Şeye Egemen Rab. Çünkü benim tapınağım harap haldeyken, her biriniz kendi evinin peşinden koşuyor.

¹⁰Bu yüzden gök size çiy vermekten geri duracak ve toprak kendi ürününü esirgeyecektir.

¹¹Ben de toprağın üzerine, dağlara, tahıla, yeni şaraba, zeytinyağına, toprağın verdiği her ürüne, insanlara, hayvanlara ve ellerinizin bütün emeğine bir kılıç çekeceğim."

¹²Yahuda oymağından Şealtiel oğlu Zerubbabel, Yehosadak oğlu Başkâhin Yeşu ve halkın geri kalan tüm kesimi, Tanrıları Rab'bin sesine ve Tanrıları Rab kendisini onlara gönderdiği için peygamber Hagay'ın sözlerine kulak verdiler; ve halk Rab'bin huzurunda derin bir korkuyla ürperdi.

¹³Rab'bin habercileri arasında bir elçi olan Hagay, Rab'bin verdiği yetkiyle halka şöyle dedi: "Ben sizinleyim, diyor Rab."

¹⁴Rab; Yahuda oymağından Şealtiel oğlu Zerubbabel'in ruhunu, Yehosadak oğlu Başkâhin Yeşu'nun ruhunu ve halkın geri kalan tüm kesiminin ruhunu harekete geçirdi; gelip Tanrıları Her Şeye Egemen Rab'bin tapınağında çalışmaya başladılar.

¹⁵Bu olay, altıncı ayın yirmi dördüncü gününde, Kral Dareios'un hükümdarlığının ikinci yılında gerçekleşti.

¹ΕΝ τῷ δευτέρῳ ἔτει ἐπὶ Δαρείου τοῦ βασιλέως, ἐν τῷ μηνὶ τῷ ἕκτῳ, μιᾷ τοῦ μηνός, ἐγένετο λόγος Κυρίου ἐν χειρὶ ᾿Αγγαίου τοῦ προφήτου λέγων· εἰπὸν πρὸς Ζοροβάβελ τὸν τοῦ Σαλαθιὴλ ἐκ φυλῆς ᾿Ιούδα καὶ πρὸς ᾿Ιησοῦν τὸν τοῦ ᾿Ιωσεδὲκ τὸν ἱερέα τὸν μέγαν λέγων·

²τάδε λέγει Κύριος παντοκράτωρ λέγων· ὁ λαὸς οὗτος λέγουσιν· οὐχ ἥκει ὁ καιρὸς τοῦ οἰκοδομῆσαι τὸν οἶκον Κυρίου.

³καὶ ἐγένετο λόγος Κυρίου ἐν χειρὶ ᾿Αγγαίου τοῦ προφήτου λέγων·

⁴εἰ καιρὸς μὲν ὑμῖν ἐστι τοῦ οἰκεῖν ἐν οἴκοις ὑμῶν κοιλοστάθμοις, ὁ δὲ οἶκος οὗτος ἐξηρήμωται;

⁵καὶ νῦν τάδε λέγει Κύριος παντοκράτωρ· τάξατε δὴ καρδίας ὑμῶν εἰς τὰς ὁδούς ὑμῶν.

⁶ἐσπείρατε πολλὰ καὶ εἰσηνέγκατε ὀλίγα, ἐφάγετε καὶ οὐκ εἰς πλησμονήν, ἐπίετε καὶ οὐκ εἰς μέθην, περιεβάλεσθε καὶ οὐκ ἐθερμάνθητε ἐν αὐτοῖς, καὶ ὁ τοὺς μισθοὺς συνάγων συνήγαγεν εἰς δεσμὸν τετρυπημένον.

⁷τάδε λέγει Κύριος παντοκράτωρ· θέσθε τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν εἰς τὰς ὁδοὺς ὑμῶν·

⁸ἀνάβητε εἰς τὸ ὄρος καὶ κόψατε ξύλα καὶ οἰκοδομήσατε τὸν οἶκον, καὶ εὐδοκήσω ἐν αὐτῷ καὶ ἐνδοξασθήσομαι, εἶπε Κύριος.

⁹ἐπεβλέψατε εἰς πολλά, καὶ ἐγένετο ὀλίγα· καὶ εἰσηνέχθη εἰς τὸν οἶκον, καὶ ἐξεφύσησα αὐτά. διὰ τοῦτο τάδε λέγει Κύριος παντοκράτωρ· ἀνθ᾿ ὧν ὁ οἶκός μού ἐστιν ἔρημος, ὑμεῖς δὲ διώκετε ἕκαστος εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ,

¹⁰διὰ τοῦτο ἀνέξει ὁ οὐρανὸς ἀπὸ δρόσου, καὶ ἡ γῆ ὑποστελεῖται τὰ ἐκφόρια αὐτῆς·

¹¹καὶ ἐπάξω ῥομφαίαν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ ὄρη καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν σῖτον καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν οἶνον καὶ ἐπὶ τὸ ἔλαιον καὶ ὅσα ἐκφέρει ἡ γῆ καὶ ἐπὶ τοὺς ἀνθρώπους καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ κτήνη καὶ ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς πόνους τῶν χειρῶν αὐτῶν.

¹²καὶ ἤκουσε Ζοροβάβελ ὁ τοῦ Σαλαθιὴλ ἐκ φυλῆς ᾿Ιούδα καὶ ᾿Ιησοῦς ὁ τοῦ ᾿Ιωσεδὲκ ὁ ἱερεὺς ὁ μέγας καὶ πάντες οἱ κατάλοιποι τοῦ λαοῦ τῆς φωνῆς Κυρίου τοῦ Θεοῦ αὐτῶν καὶ τῶν λόγων τοῦ ᾿Αγγαίου τοῦ προφήτου, καθότι ἐξαπέστειλεν αὐτὸν Κύριος ὁ Θεὸς αὐτῶν πρὸς αὐτούς, καὶ ἐφοβήθη ὁ λαὸς ἀπὸ προσώπου Κυρίου.

¹³καὶ εἶπεν ᾿Αγγαῖος ἄγγελος Κυρίου ἐν ἀγγέλοις Κυρίου τῷ λαῷ· ἐγώ εἰμι μεθ᾿ ὑμῶν, λέγει Κύριος.

¹⁴καὶ ἐξήγειρε Κύριος τὸ πνεῦμα Ζοροβάβελ τοῦ Σαλαθιὴλ ἐκ φυλῆς ᾿Ιούδα καὶ τὸ πνεῦμα ᾿Ιησοῦ τοῦ ᾿Ιωσεδὲκ τοῦ ἱερέως τοῦ μεγάλου καὶ τὸ πνεῦμα τῶν καταλοίπων παντὸς τοῦ λαοῦ, καὶ εἰσῆλθον καὶ ἐποίουν ἔργα ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ Κυρίου παντοκράτορος Θεοῦ αὐτῶν

¹⁵τῇ τετράδι καὶ εἰκάδι τοῦ μηνὸς τοῦ ἕκτου, τῷ δευτέρῳ ἔτει, ἐπὶ Δαρείου τοῦ βασιλέως.

¹In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first [day] of the month, the word of the Lord came by the hand of the prophet Aggaeus, saying, Speak to Zorobabel the son of Salathiel, of the tribe of Juda, and to Jesus the son of Josedec, the high priest, saying,

²Thus saith the Lord Almighty, saying, This people say, The time is not come to build the house of the Lord.

³And the word of the Lord came by the hand of the prophet Aggaeus, saying,

⁴Is it time for you to dwell in your ceiled houses, whereas our house is desolate?

⁵And now thus saith the Lord Almighty; Consider your ways, I pray you.

⁶Ye have sown much, but brought in little; ye have eaten, and are not satisfied; ye have drunk, and are not satisfied with drink, ye have clothed yourselves, and have not become warm thereby: and he that earns wages has gathered [them] into a bag full of holes.

⁷Thus saith the Lord Almighty; Consider your ways.

⁸Go up to the mountain, and cut timber; build the house, and I will take pleasure in it, and be glorified, saith the Lord.

⁹Ye looked for much, and there came little; and it was brought into the house, and I blew it away. Therefore thus saith the Lord Almighty, Because my house is desolate, and ye run everyone into his own house;

¹⁰therefore shall the sky withhold dew, and the earth shall keep back her produce.

¹¹And I will bring a sword upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the wine, and upon the oil, and all that the earth produces, and upon the men, and upon the cattle, and upon all the labours of their hands.

¹²And Zorobabel the son of Salathiel, of the tribe of Juda, and Jesus the son of Josedec, the high priest, and all the remnant of the people, hearkened to the voice of the Lord their God, and the words of the prophet Aggaeus, according as the Lord their God had sent him to them, and the people feared before the Lord.

¹³And Aggaeus the Lord’s messenger spoke among the messengers of the Lord to the people, [saying], I am with you, saith the Lord.

¹⁴And the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zorobabel the son of Salathiel, of the tribe of Juda, and the spirit of Jesus the son of Josedec, the high priest, and the spirit of the remnant of all the people; and they went in, and wrought in the house of the Lord Almighty their God,

¹⁵on the four and twentieth [day] of the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.
