¹Esdras kutsal alanın avlusundan kalkıp Eliaşib oğlu Yonan'ın tapınak odasına gitti.

²Orada geceledi; topluluğun işlediği büyük şeriatsızlıklar için yas tuttuğundan ne ekmek yedi ne de su içti.

³Bütün Yahudiye ve Yeruşalim'de, sürgünden dönenlerin hepsinin Yeruşalim'de toplanması için resmi bir çağrı yapıldı.

⁴Önderlik eden ihtiyarların kararına göre iki ya da üç gün içinde gelmeyenlerin hayvanlarına el konulup tapınağa adanacak, kendisi de sürgün topluluğundan tamamen dışlanacaktı.

⁵Böylece Yahuda ve Benyamin oymaklarından olan herkes üç gün içinde Yeruşalim'de toplandı; bu, dokuzuncu ayın yirminci günüydü.

⁶Bütün topluluk tapınağın geniş meydanında, baş gösteren kış fırtınası yüzünden titreyerek birlikte oturdu.

⁷Esdras ayağa kalkıp onlara şöyle dedi: "Sizler yasa dışı davrandınız ve yabancı soydan kadınlarla evlenerek İsrail'in günahını artırdınız.

⁸Şimdi atalarımızın Tanrısı Rab'be günahınızı itiraf edip O'na yücelik sunun,

⁹O'nun isteğini yerine getirin; kendinizi bu ülkenin halklarından ve yabancı soydan kadınlardan ayırın."

¹⁰Bütün topluluk yüksek sesle bağırarak şöyle yanıt verdi: "Aynen söylediğin gibi yapacağız!

¹¹Ancak topluluk çok kalabalık ve mevsim kış; dışarıda açık havada duracak gücümüz yok. Üstelik bu iş bir iki günde bitmez, çünkü bu konuda çok fazla günah işledik.

⁴²Kâhin ve yasa okuyucusu Esdras, bu amaçla yapılmış ahşap bir kürsü üzerinde duruyordu.

⁴³Sağında Mattatias, Sammus, Ananias, Azaryas, Urias, Hezekiyas ve Baalsamos duruyordu.

⁴⁴Solunda ise Paldaios, Misael, Melkias, Lotasubos, Nabarias ve Zaharias duruyordu.

⁴⁵Esdras herkesin gözü önünde kitabı açtı; çünkü hepsinden daha yüksek, görkemli bir yerde duruyordu.

⁴⁶Kitabı açtığında bütün halk ayağa kalktı. Esdras, Yüceler Yücesi Tanrı'ya, Her Şeye Egemen, Orduların Rab Tanrısı'na övgüler sundu.

⁴⁷Bütün halk ellerini kaldırarak, "Amin!" diye bağırdı. Sonra yere kapanıp Rab'be secde ettiler.

⁴⁸Yeşu, Anniut, Sarabias, Yadinos, Yakubos, Sabbataios, Autayas, Mayannas, Kalitas, Azarias, Yozabdos, Ananias ve Palias adındaki Levililer halka Rab'bin Yasası'nı öğretiyor, okunanları canlandırıp ilham ederek anlamalarını sağlıyorlardı.

⁴⁹Attharates, Başkâhin ve yasa okuyucusu Esdras ve halka öğreten Levililer bütün topluluğa şöyle dediler:

⁵⁰"Bugün Rab'be adanmış kutsal bir gündür." Çünkü halk Yasa'nın sözlerini işitince ağlıyordu.

⁵¹"Gidin, yağlı yiyecekler yiyin, tatlı içecekler için; hazırlığı olmayanlara da paylar gönderin.

⁵²Çünkü bugün Rab'be adanmış kutsal bir gündür. Üzülmeyin, çünkü Rab sizi onurlandıracaktır."

⁵³Levililer de bütün halkı yatıştırarak, "Sakin olun, bugün kutsal bir gündür, üzülmeyin" diyorlardı.

⁵⁴Böylece tüm halk yiyip içmek, sevinçle kutlamak, hazırlığı olmayanlara paylar göndermek ve büyük bir şenlik yapmak üzere gitti.

⁵⁵Çünkü kendilerine öğretilen ve toplanmalarına vesile olan sözleri ruhsal olarak iyice kavramışlardı.

¹ΚΑΙ ἀναστὰς ῎Εσδρας ἀπὸ τῆς αὐλῆς τοῦ ἱεροῦ ἐπορεύθη εἰς τὸ παστοφόριον ᾿Ιωνὰν τοῦ ᾿Ελιασίβου,

²καὶ αὐλισθεὶς ἐκεῖ ἄρτου οὐκ ἐγεύσατο οὐδὲ ὕδωρ ἔπιε, πενθῶν ἐπὶ τῶν ἀνομιῶν τῶν μεγάλων τοῦ πλήθους.

³καὶ ἐγένετο κήρυγμα ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ ᾿Ιουδαίᾳ καὶ ῾Ιερουσαλὴμ πᾶσι τοῖς ἐκ τῆς αἰχμαλωσίας συναχθῆναι εἰς ῾Ιερουσαλήμ·

⁴καὶ ὅσοι ἂν μὴ ἀπαντήσωσιν ἐν δυσὶν ἢ τρισὶν ἡμέραις κατὰ τὸ κρίμα τῶν προκαθημένων πρεσβυτέρων, ἀνιερωθήσονται τὰ κτήνη αὐτῶν, καὶ αὐτὸς ἀλλοτριωθήσεται ἀπὸ τοῦ πλήθους τῆς αἰχμαλωσίας.

⁵καὶ ἐπισυνήχθησαν πάντες οἱ ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς ᾿Ιούδα καὶ Βενιαμὶν ἐν τρισὶν ἡμέραις εἰς ῾Ιερουσαλήμ (οὗτος ὁ μὴν ἔννατος τῇ εἰκάδι τοῦ μηνός),

⁶καὶ συνεκάθισαν πᾶν τὸ πλῆθος ἐν τῷ εὐρυχώρῳ τοῦ ἱεροῦ τρέμοντες διὰ τὸν ἐνεστῶτα χειμῶνα.

⁷καὶ ἀναστὰς ῎Εσδρας εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· ὑμεῖς ἠνομήσατε καὶ συνῳκίσατε γυναιξὶν ἀλλογενέσι τοῦ προσθεῖναι ἁμαρτίας τῷ ᾿Ισραήλ·

⁸καὶ νῦν δότε ὁμολογίαν δόξαν τῷ Κυρίῳ Θεῷ τῶν πατέρων ἡμῶν

⁹καὶ ποιήσατε τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ καὶ χωρίσθητε ἀπὸ τῶν ἐθνῶν τῆς γῆς καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν γυναικῶν τῶν ἀλλογενῶν.

¹⁰καὶ ἐφώνησεν ἅπαν τὸ πλῆθος καὶ εἶπον μεγάλῃ τῇ φωνῇ· οὕτως ὡς εἴρηκας ποιήσομεν.

¹¹ἀλλὰ τὸ πλῆθος πολὺ καὶ ὥρα χειμερινή, καὶ οὐκ ἰσχύομεν στῆναι αἴθριοι, καὶ τὸ ἔργον οὐκ ἔστιν ἡμῖν ἡμέρας μιᾶς οὐδὲ δύο· ἐπὶ πλεῖον γὰρ ἡμάρτομεν ἐν τούτοις.

¹²στήτωσαν δὲ οἱ προηγούμενοι τοῦ πλήθους, καὶ πάντες οἱ ἐκ τῶν κατοικιῶν ἡμῶν ὅσοι ἔχουσι γυναῖκας ἀλλογενεῖς, παραγενηθήτωσαν λαβόντες χρόνον·

¹³ἑκάστου δὲ τόπου τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους καὶ τοὺς κριτὰς ἕως τοῦ λῦσαι τὴν ὀργὴν Κυρίου ἀφ᾿ ἡμῶν τοῦ πράγματος τούτου.

¹⁴᾿Ιωνάθας ᾿Αζαήλου καὶ ᾿Εζεκίας Θεωκανοῦ ἐπεδέξαντο κατὰ ταῦτα, καὶ Μοσόλλαμος καὶ Λευὶς καὶ Σαββαταῖος συνεβράβευσαν αὐτοῖς.

¹⁵καὶ ἐποίησαν κατὰ πάντα ταῦτα οἱ ἐκ τῆς αἰχμαλωσίας.

¹⁶καὶ ἐπελέξατο αὐτῷ ῎Εσδρας ὁ ἱερεὺς ἄνδρας ἡγουμένους τῶν πατριῶν αὐτῶν πάντας κατ᾿ ὄνομα, καὶ συνεκλείσθησαν τῇ νουμηνίᾳ τοῦ μηνὸς τοῦ δεκάτου ἐτάσαι τὸ πρᾶγμα.

¹⁷καὶ ἤχθη ἐπὶ πέρας τὰ κατὰ τοὺς ἄνδρας τοὺς ἐπισυνέχοντας γυναῖκας ἀλλογενεῖς ἕως τῆς νουμηνίας τοῦ πρώτου μηνός.

¹⁸καὶ εὑρέθησαν τῶν ἱερέων οἱ ἐπισυναχθέντες ἀλλογενεῖς γυναῖκας ἔχοντες·

¹⁹ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν ᾿Ιησοῦ τοῦ ᾿Ιωσεδὲκ καὶ τῶν ἀδελφῶν αὐτοῦ Μαθήλας καὶ ᾿Ελεάζαρος καὶ ᾿Ιώριβος καὶ ᾿Ιωαδάνος·

²⁰καὶ ἐπέβαλον τὰς χεῖρας ἐκβαλεῖν τὰς γυναῖκας αὐτῶν, καὶ εἰς ἐξιλασμὸν κριοὺς ὑπὲρ τῆς ἀγνοίας αὐτῶν.

²¹καὶ ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν ᾿Εμμήρ, ᾿Ανανίας καὶ Ζαβδαῖος καὶ Μάνης καὶ Σαμαῖος καὶ ῾Ιερεὴλ καὶ ᾿Αζαρίας·

²²καὶ ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν Φαισούρ, ᾿Ελιωναΐς Μασσίας ᾿Ισμαῆλος καὶ Ναθαναῆλος καὶ ᾿Ωκόδηλος καὶ Σαλόας·

²³καὶ ἐκ τῶν Λευιτῶν, ᾿Ιωζαβάδος καὶ Σεμεΐς καὶ Κώϊος (οὗτός ἐστι Καλιτάς) καὶ Παθαῖος καὶ ᾿Ιούδας καὶ ᾿Ιωνάς·

²⁴ἐκ τῶν ἱεροψαλτῶν, ᾿Ελιάσεβος, Βακχοῦρος·

²⁵ἐκ τῶν θυρωρῶν, Σαλοῦμος καὶ Τολβάνης·

²⁶ἐκ τοῦ ᾿Ισραὴλ ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν Φόρος, ῾Ιερμὰς καὶ ᾿Ιεζίας καὶ Μελχίας καὶ Μαῆλος καὶ ᾿Ελεάζαρος καὶ ᾿Ασεβίας καὶ Βαναίας·

²⁷ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν ᾿Ηλά, Ματθανίας, Ζαχαρίας καὶ ᾿Ιεζριῆλος καὶ ᾿Ιωαβδίος καὶ ῾Ιερεμὼθ καὶ ᾿Αϊδίας·

²⁸καὶ ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν Ζαμώθ, ᾿Ελιαδάς, ᾿Ελιάσιμος, ᾿Οθονίας ᾿Ιαριμὼθ καὶ Σάβαθος καὶ Ζεραλίας·

²⁹καὶ ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν Βηβαΐ, ᾿Ιωάννης καὶ ᾿Ανανίας καὶ ᾿Ιωζάβδος καὶ ᾿Αμαθίας·

³⁰ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν Μανί, ᾿Ωλαμός, Μαμοῦχος, ᾿Ιεδαῖος, ᾿Ιασοῦβος καὶ ᾿Ιασαῆλος καὶ ῾Ιερεμώθ·

³¹καὶ ἐξ υἱῶν ᾿Αδδί, Νάαθος καὶ Μοοσίας, Λακκοῦνος καὶ Ναΐδος, Ματθανίας καὶ Σεσθήλ· καὶ Βαλνοῦος καὶ Μανασσίας·

³²καὶ ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν ᾿Ανάν, ᾿Ελιωνὰς καὶ ᾿Ασαΐας καὶ Μελχίας καὶ Σαββαῖος καὶ Σίμων Χοσαμαῖος·

³³καὶ ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν ᾿Ασόμ, ᾿Αλταναῖος καὶ Ματταθίας καὶ Σαβανναῖος καὶ ᾿Ελιφαλὰτ καὶ Μανασσῆς καὶ Σεμεΐ·

³⁴καὶ ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν Βαανί, ῾Ιερεμίας, Μομδίος, ᾿Ισμαῆρος, ᾿Ιουήλ, Μαβδαΐ καὶ Πεδίας καὶ ῎Ανως, Ῥαβασίων καὶ ᾿Ενάσιβος καὶ Μαμνιτάναιμος, ᾿Ελίασις, Βαννούς, ᾿Ελιαλί, Σομεΐς, Σελεμίας, Ναθανίας· καὶ ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν ᾿Εζωρά, Σεσίς, ᾿Εσρήλ, ᾿Αζαῆλος, Σαματός, Ζαμβρί, ᾿Ιώσηφος·

³⁵καὶ ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν ᾿Εθμά, Μαζιτίας, Ζαβαδαίας, ᾿Ηδαΐς, ᾿Ιουήλ, Βαναίας.

³⁶πάντες οὗτοι συνῴκισαν γυναῖκας ἀλλογενεῖς, καὶ ἀπέλυσαν αὐτὰς σὺν τέκνοις.

³⁷Καὶ κατῴκησαν οἱ ἱερεῖς καὶ οἱ Λευῖται καὶ οἱ ἐκ τοῦ ᾿Ισραὴλ ἐν ῾Ιερουσαλὴμ καὶ ἐν τῇ χώρᾳ τῇ νουμηνίᾳ τοῦ μηνὸς τοῦ ἑβδόμου καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ ᾿Ισραὴλ ἐν ταῖς κατοικίαις αὐτῶν.

³⁸καὶ συνήχθη πᾶν τὸ πλῆθος ὁμοθυμαδὸν ἐπὶ τὸ εὐρύχωρον τοῦ πρὸς ἀνατολὰς τοῦ ἱεροῦ πυλῶνος

³⁹καὶ εἶπεν ῎Εσδρᾳ τῷ ἱερεῖ καὶ ἀναγνώστῃ· κόμισαι τὸν νόμον Μωυσῆ τὸν παραδοθέντα ὑπὸ Κυρίου Θεοῦ ᾿Ισραήλ.

⁴⁰καὶ ἐκόμισεν ῎Εσδρας ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς τὸν νόμον παντὶ τῷ πλήθει ἀνθρώπου ἕως γυναικὸς καὶ πᾶσι τοῖς ἱερεῦσιν ἀκοῦσαι τοῦ νόμου νουμηνίᾳ τοῦ ἑβδόμου μηνός.

⁴¹καὶ ἀνεγίνωσκεν ἐν τῷ πρὸ τοῦ ἱεροῦ πυλῶνος εὐρυχώρῳ, ἐξ ὄρθρου ἕως μέσης ἡμέρας, ἐνώπιον ἀνδρῶν τε καὶ γυναικῶν, καὶ ἀπέδωκαν πᾶν τὸ πλῆθος τὸν νοῦν εἰς τὸν νόμον.

⁴²καὶ ἔστη ῎Εσδρας ὁ ἱερεὺς καὶ ἀναγνώστης τοῦ νόμου ἐπὶ τοῦ ξυλίνου βήματος τοῦ κατασκευασθέντος,

⁴³καὶ ἔστησαν παρ᾿ αὐτῷ Ματταθίας, Σαμμούς, ᾿Ανανίας, ᾿Αζαρίας, Οὐρίας, ᾿Εζεκίας, Βαάλσαμος ἐκ δεξιῶν,

⁴⁴καὶ ἐξ εὐωνύμων Φαλδαῖος καὶ Μισαήλ, Μελχίας, Λωθάσουβος, Ναβαρίας, Ζαχαρίας.

⁴⁵καὶ ἀναλαβὼν ῎Εσδρας τὸ βιβλίον ἐνώπιον τοῦ πλήθους προεκάθητο ἐπιδόξως ἐνώπιον πάντων,

⁴⁶καὶ ἐν τῷ λῦσαι τὸν νόμον πάντες ὀρθοὶ ἔστησαν. καὶ εὐλόγησεν ῎Εσδρας τῷ Κυρίῳ Θεῷ ῾Υψίστῳ Θεῷ Σαβαὼθ παντοκράτορι,

⁴⁷καὶ ἐπεφώνησε πᾶν τὸ πλῆθος ἀμήν. καὶ ἄραντες ἄνω τὰς χεῖρας, προσπεσόντες ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν, προσεκύνησαν τῷ Κυρίῳ.

⁴⁸᾿Ιησοῦς καὶ ᾿Αννιοὺθ καὶ Σαραβίας καὶ ᾿Ιαδινὸς καὶ ᾿Ιάκουβος, Σαββαταῖος, Αὐταίας, Μαιάννας καὶ Καλίτας, ᾿Αζαρίας καὶ ᾿Ιώζαβδος καὶ ᾿Ανανίας, Φαλίας, οἱ Λευῖται, ἐδίδασκον τὸν νόμον τοῦ Κυρίου καὶ πρὸς τὸ πλῆθος ἀνεγίνωσκον τὸν νόμον τοῦ Κυρίου, ἐμφυσιοῦντες ἅμα τὴν ἀνάγνωσιν.

⁴⁹καὶ εἶπεν ᾿Ατθαράτης ῎Εσδρᾳ τῷ ἀρχιερεῖ καὶ ἀναγνώστῃ καὶ τοῖς Λευίταις τοῖς διδάσκουσι τὸ πλῆθος ἐπὶ πάντας·

⁵⁰ἡ ἡμέρα αὕτη ἐστὶν ἁγία τῷ Κυρίῳ, καὶ πάντες ἔκλαιον ἐν τῷ ἀκοῦσαι τοῦ νόμου·

⁵¹βαδίσαντες οὖν φάγετε λιπάσματα καὶ πίετε γλυκάσματα καὶ ἀποστείλατε ἀποστολὰς τοῖς μὴ ἔχουσιν,

⁵²ἁγία γὰρ ἡ ἡμέρα τῷ Κυρίῳ· καὶ μὴ λυπεῖσθε, ὁ γὰρ Κύριος δοξάσει ὑμᾶς.

⁵³καὶ οἱ Λευῖται ἐκέλευον παντὶ τῷ δήμῳ λέγοντες· ἡ ἡμέρα αὕτη ἁγία, μὴ λυπεῖσθε.

⁵⁴καὶ ᾤχοντο πάντες φαγεῖν καὶ πιεῖν καὶ εὐφραίνεσθαι καὶ δοῦναι ἀποστολὰς τοῖς μὴ ἔχουσι καὶ εὐφρανθῆναι μεγάλως,

⁵⁵ὅτι γὰρ ἐνεφυσιώθησαν ἐν τοῖς ῥήμασιν, οἷς ἐδιδάχθησαν, καὶ ἐπισυνήχθησαν.

¹Then Esdras rising from the court of the temple went to the chamber of Joanan the son of Eliasib,

²And remained there, and did eat no meat nor drink water, mourning for the great iniquities of the multitude.

³And there was a proclamation in all Jewry and Jerusalem to all them that were of the captivity, that they should be gathered together at Jerusalem:

⁴And that whosoever met not there within two or three days according as the elders that bare rule appointed, their cattle should be seized to the use of the temple, and himself cast out from them that were of the captivity.

⁵And in three days were all they of the tribe of Judah and Benjamin gathered together at Jerusalem the twentieth day of the ninth month.

⁶And all the multitude sat trembling in the broad court of the temple because of the present foul weather.

⁷So Esdras arose up, and said unto them, Ye have transgressed the law in marrying strange wives, thereby to increase the sins of Israel.

⁸And now by confessing give glory unto the Lord God of our fathers,

⁹And do his will, and separate yourselves from the heathen of the land, and from the strange women.

¹⁰Then cried the whole multitude, and said with a loud voice, Like as thou hast spoken, so will we do.

¹¹But forasmuch as the people are many, and it is foul weather, so that we cannot stand without, and this is not a work of a day or two, seeing our sin in these things is spread far:

¹²Therefore let the rulers of the multitude stay, and let all them of our habitations that have strange wives come at the time appointed,

¹³And with them the rulers and judges of every place, till we turn away the wrath of the Lord from us for this matter.

¹⁴[Then] Jonathan [the son] of Azael and Ezechias [the son] of Theocanus accordingly took this matter upon them: and Mosollam and Levis and Sabbatheus helped them.

¹⁵And they that were of the captivity did according to all these things.

¹⁶And Esdras the priest chose unto him the principal men of their families, all by name: and in the first day of the tenth month they sat together to examine the matter.

¹⁷So their cause that held strange wives was brought to an end in the first day of the first month.

¹⁸And of the priests that were come together, and had strange wives, there were found:

¹⁹Of the sons of Jesus the [son] of Josedec, and his brethren; Matthelas and Eleazar, and Joribus and Joadanus.

²⁰And they gave their hands to put away their wives and to offer rams to make reconcilement for their errors.

²¹And of the sons of Emmer; Ananias, and Zabdeus, and Manes, and Sameius, and Hiereel, and Azarias.

²²And of the sons of Phaisur; Elionas, Massias, Israel, and Nathanael, and Ocidelus and Saloas.

²³And of the Levites; Jozabad, and Semis, and Coius, who was called Calitas, and Patheus, and Judas, and Jonas.

²⁴Of the holy singers; Eleasabus, Bacchurus.

²⁵Of the porters; Sallumus, and Tolbanes.

²⁶Of them of Israel, of the sons of Phoros; Hiermas, and Jezias, and Melchias, and Maelus, and Eleazar, and Asebias, and Banaeas.

²⁷Of the sons of Ela; Matthanias, Zacharias, and Jezrielus, and Joabdius, and Hieremoth, and Aedias.

²⁸And of the sons of Zamoth; Eliadas, Eliasimus, Othonias, Jarimoth, and Sabatus, and Zeralias.

²⁹Of the sons of Bebai; Johannes, and Ananias and Josabad, and Amatheis.

³⁰Of the sons of Mani; Olamus, Mamuchus, Jedeus, Jasubus, Jasael, and Hieremoth.

³¹And of the sons of Addi; Naathus, and Moosias, Lacunus, and Naidus, and Mathanias, and Sesthel, Balnuus, and Manasseas.

³²And of the sons of Annas; Elionas and Aseas, and Melchias, and Sabbeus, and Simon, Chosameus.

³³And of the sons of Asom; Altaneus, and Matthias, Sabanneus, Eliphalat, and Manasses, and Semei.

³⁴And of the sons of Maani; Jeremias, Momdis, Omaerus, Juel, Mabdai, and Pelias, and Anos, Carabasion, and Enasibus, and Mamnitanaimus, Eliasis, Bannus, Eliali, Samis, Selemias, Nathanias: and of the sons of Ozora; Sesis, Esril, Azaelus, Samatus, Zambis, Josephus.

³⁵And of the sons of Ethma; Mazitias, Zabadaias, Edais, Juel, Banaias.

³⁶All these had taken strange wives, and they put them away with their children.

³⁷And the priests and Levites, and they that were of Israel, dwelt in Jerusalem, and in the country, in the first day of the seventh month: so the children of Israel were in their habitations.

³⁸And the whole multitude came together with one accord into the broad place of the holy porch toward the east:

³⁹And they spake unto Esdras the priest and reader, that he would bring the law of Moses, that was given of the Lord God of Israel.

⁴⁰So Esdras the chief priest brought the law unto the whole multitude from man to woman, and to all the priests, to hear law in the first day of the seventh month.

⁴¹And he read in the broad court before the holy porch from morning unto midday, before both men and women; and the multitude gave heed unto the law.

⁴²And Esdras the priest and reader of the law stood up upon a pulpit of wood, which was made for that purpose.

⁴³And there stood up by him Mattathias, Sammus, Ananias, Azarias, Urias, Ezecias, Baalasamus, upon the right hand:

⁴⁴And upon his left hand stood Phaldaius, Misael, Melchias, Lothasubus, Nabarias and Zacharias.

⁴⁵Then took Esdras the book of the law before the multitude: for he sat honourably in the first place in the sight of them all.

⁴⁶And when he opened the law, they stood all straight up. So Esdras blessed the Lord God most High, the God of hosts, Almighty.

⁴⁷And all the people answered, Amen; and lifting up their hands they fell to the ground, and worshipped the Lord.

⁴⁸Also Jesus, Anniuth, Sarabias, Adinus, Jacubus, Sabateas, Auteas, Maianneas, and Calitas, Azarias, and Joazabdus, and Ananias, Phalias, the Levites, taught the law of the Lord, making them withal to understand it.

⁴⁹Then spake Attharates unto Esdras the chief priest, and reader, and to the Levites that taught the multitude, even to all, saying,

⁵⁰This day is holy unto the Lord; (for they all wept when they heard the law:)

⁵¹Go then, and eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send part to them that have nothing;

⁵²For this day is holy unto the Lord: and be not sorrowful; for the Lord will bring you to honour.

⁵³So the Levites published all things to the people, saying, This day is holy to the Lord; be not sorrowful.

⁵⁴Then went they their way, every one to eat and drink, and make merry, and to give part to them that had nothing, and to make great cheer;

⁵⁵Because they understood the words wherein they were instructed, and for the which they had been assembled.
