¹Kral Demetrius'un oğlu Antiyohus, Ege adalarından Yahudilerin kâhini ve ulus önderi Şimon'a ve tüm ulusa mektuplar gönderdi.

²Mektupların içeriği şu şekildeydi: «Kral Antiyohus'tan, büyük kâhin ve ulus önderi Şimon'a ve Yahudi ulusuna selam!

³Mademki bazı uğursuz adamlar babalarımızın krallığını ele geçirdi; bense krallık üzerinde hak iddia edip onu eski durumuna kavuşturmak istiyorum. Bu amaçla büyük bir yabancı asker topluluğu bir araya getirdim ve savaş gemileri hazırladım.

²⁵Kral Antiyohus ikinci günde de Dora önünde ordugah kurdu; sürekli saldırarak ve savaş makineleri kullanarak Trifon'u kuşattı, içeri girmesini ve dışarı çıkmasını engelledi.

²⁶Şimon ona yardım etmek üzere seçkin iki bin asker, ayrıca gümüş, altın ve bol miktarda askeri teçhizat gönderdi.

²⁷Ancak Antiyohus bunları kabul etmek istemedi; daha önce onunla yaptığı tüm anlaşmaları bozdu ve ona yabancılaştı.

²⁸Görüşmek üzere arkadaşı Atenobiyus'u Şimon'a gönderip şöyle dedi: «Sizler krallığımın kentleri olan Yafa'yı, Gezer'i ve Yeruşalim'deki kaleyi elinizde tutuyorsunuz.

²⁹Onların sınırlarını harap ettiniz, ülkede büyük yıkıma yol açtınız ve krallığımda birçok bölgeyi egemenliğiniz altına aldınız.

³⁰Şimdi ele geçirdiğiniz kentleri ve Yahudiye sınırları dışında egemenlik kurduğunuz yerlerin vergilerini geri verin.

³¹Yoksa bunlara karşılık beş yüz talant gümüş, verdiğiniz zararlar ve kentlerin vergileri için de bir beş yüz talant daha verin; aksi takdirde gelip sizinle savaşacağız.»

³²Kralın arkadaşı Atenobiyus Yeruşalim'e geldi; Şimon'un görkemini, altın ve gümüş kaplarla dolu büfesini, etrafındaki kalabalık hizmetkâr topluluğunu görünce şaşkına döndü ve kralın sözlerini ona iletti.

³³Şimon ona şu karşılığı verdi: «Biz ne yabancı bir toprak aldık ne de başkalarının malına el koyduk; sadece babalarımızın mirasından düşen payı geri aldık. Bu topraklar bir dönem düşmanlarımız tarafından haksız yere işgal edilmişti.

³⁴Biz ise fırsatını bulunca babalarımızın mirasına sahip çıktık.

³⁵İstediğin Yafa ve Gezer'e gelince; bu kentler halkımıza ve ülkemize büyük zararlar veriyordu. Bunlar için yüz talant vermeyi kabul ediyoruz.» Atenobiyus ona tek bir söz bile söylemedi.

³⁶Büyük bir öfkeyle kralın yanına döndü; bu sözleri, Şimon'un görkemini ve gördüğü her şeyi krala anlattı. Kral çok büyük bir öfkeye kapıldı.

³⁷Bu sırada Trifon bir gemiye binerek Ortosyas'a kaçtı.

³⁸Bunun üzerine kral, Kendebeyus'u kıyı bölgesinin komutanı atadı ve ona piyade ve süvari birlikleri verdi.

³⁹Yahudiye sınırına ordugah kurmasını, Kedron'u yeniden inşa etmesini, kapılarını güçlendirmesini ve halka karşı savaşmasını buyurdu; kralın kendisi ise Trifon'un peşine düştü.

⁴⁰Kendebeyus Yamniya'ya geldi ve halkı kışkırtmaya, Yahudiye'ye akınlar düzenlemeye, halkı tutsak alıp öldürmeye başladı.

⁴¹Kedron'u inşa etti; kralın kendisine buyurduğu gibi, Yahudiye yollarına akınlar düzenlemek üzere oraya süvariler ve piyade birlikleri yerleştirdi.

¹ΚΑΙ ἀπέστειλεν ὁ ᾿Αντίοχος υἱὸς Δημητρίου τοῦ βασιλέως ἐπιστολὰς ἀπὸ τῶν νήσων τῆς θαλάσσης Σίμωνι ἱερεῖ καὶ ἐθνάρχῃ τῶν ᾿Ιουδαίων καὶ παντὶ τῷ ἔθνει.

²καὶ ἦσαν περιέχουσαι τὸν τρόπον τοῦτον· «Βασιλεὺς ᾿Αντίοχος Σίμωνι ἱερεῖ μεγάλῳ καὶ ἐθνάρχῃ καὶ ἔθνει ᾿Ιουδαίων χαίρειν,

³ἐπειδὴ ἄνδρες λοιμοὶ κατεκράτησαν τῆς βασιλείας τῶν πατέρων ἡμῶν, βούλομαι δὲ ἀντιποιήσασθαι τῆς βασιλείας, ὅπως ἀποκαταστήσω αὐτὴν ὡς ἦν τὸ πρότερον, ἐξενολόγησα δὲ πλῆθος δυνάμεων καὶ κατεσκεύασα πλοῖα πολεμικά,

⁴βούλομαι δὲ ἐκβῆναι κατὰ τὴν χώραν, ὅπως μετέλθω τοὺς κατεφθαρκότας τὴν χώραν ἡμῶν καὶ τοὺς ἠρημωκότας πόλεις πολλὰς ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ·

⁵νῦν οὖν ἵστημί σοι πάντα τὰ ἀφαιρέματα, ἃ ἀφῆκάν σοι οἱ πρὸ ἐμοῦ βασιλεῖς καὶ ὅσα ἄλλα δόματα ἀφῆκάν σοι.

⁶καὶ ἐπέτρεψά σοι ποιῆσαι κόμμα ἴδιον νόμισμα τῇ χώρᾳ σου,

⁷῾Ιερουσαλὴμ δὲ καὶ τὰ ἅγια εἶναι ἐλεύθερα· καὶ πάντα τὰ ὅπλα ὅσα κατεσκεύασας, καὶ τὰ ὀχυρώματα, ἃ ᾠκοδόμησας ὧν κρατεῖς, μενέτω σοι.

⁸καὶ πᾶν ὀφείλημα βασιλικὸν καὶ τὰ ἐσόμενα βασιλικά, ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν καὶ εἰς τὸν ἅπαντα χρόνον ἀφιέσθω σοι·

⁹ὡς δ᾿ ἂν κρατήσωμεν τῆς βασιλείας ἡμῶν, δοξάσομέν σε καὶ τὸ ἔθνος σου καὶ τὸ ἱερὸν δόξῃ μεγάλῃ, ὥστε φανερὰν γενέσθαι τὴν δόξαν ὑμῶν ἐν πάσῃ τῇ γῇ». -

¹⁰῎Ετους τετάρτου καὶ ἑβδομηκοστοῦ καὶ ἑκατοστοῦ ἐξῆλθεν ᾿Αντίοχος εἰς τὴν γῆν πατέρων αὐτοῦ, καὶ συνῆλθον πρὸς αὐτὸν πᾶσαι αἱ δυνάμεις, ὥστε ὀλίγους εἶναι τοὺς καταλειφθέντας σὺν Τρύφωνι.

¹¹καὶ ἐδίωξεν αὐτὸν ᾿Αντίοχος ὁ βασιλεύς, καὶ ἦλθε φεύγων εἰς Δωρᾶ τὴν ἐπὶ τῆς θαλάσσης·

¹²εἶδε γὰρ ὅτι συνῆκται ἐπ᾿ αὐτὸν τὰ κακά, καὶ ἀφῆκαν αὐτὸν αἱ δυνάμεις.

¹³καὶ παρενέβαλεν ᾿Αντίοχος ἐπὶ Δωρᾶ καὶ σὺν αὐτῷ δώδεκα μυριάδες ἀνδρῶν πολεμιστῶν καὶ ὀκτακισχιλία ἵππος.

¹⁴καὶ ἐκύκλωσε τὴν πόλιν, καὶ τὰ πλοῖα ἀπὸ θαλάσσης συνῆψαν, καὶ ἔθλιβε τὴν πόλιν ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς καὶ τῆς θαλάσσης, καὶ οὐκ εἴασεν οὐδένα ἐκπορεύεσθαι καὶ εἰσπορεύεσθαι.

¹⁵Καὶ ἦλθε Νουμήνιος καὶ οἱ παρ᾿ αὐτοῦ ἐκ Ῥώμης ἔχοντες ἐπιστολὰς τοῖς βασιλεῦσι καὶ ταῖς χώραις, ἐν αἷς ἐγέγραπτο τάδε·

¹⁶«Λεύκιος ὕπατος Ῥωμαίων Πτολεμαίῳ βασιλεῖ χαίρειν.

¹⁷οἱ πρεσβευταὶ τῶν ᾿Ιουδαίων ἦλθον πρὸς ἡμᾶς, φίλοι ἡμῶν καὶ σύμμαχοι, ἀνανεούμενοι τὴν ἐξ ἀρχῆς φιλίαν καὶ συμμαχίαν, ἀπεσταλμένοι ἀπὸ Σίμωνος τοῦ ἀρχιερέως καὶ τοῦ δήμου τῶν ᾿Ιουδαίων·

¹⁸ἤνεγκαν δὲ ἀσπίδα χρυσῆν ἀπὸ μνῶν χιλίων.

¹⁹ἤρεσεν οὖν ἡμῖν γράψαι τοῖς βασιλεῦσι καὶ ταῖς χώραις ὅπως μὴ ἐκζητήσωσιν αὐτοῖς κακὰ καὶ μὴ πολεμήσωσιν αὐτοὺς καὶ τὰς πόλεις αὐτῶν καὶ τὴν χώραν αὐτῶν καὶ ἵνα μὴ συμμαχήσωσι τοῖς πολεμοῦσιν αὐτούς.

²⁰ἔδοξε δὲ ἡμῖν δέξασθαι τὴν ἀσπίδα παρ᾿ αὐτῶν.

²¹εἴ τινες οὖν λοιμοὶ διαπεφεύγασιν ἐκ τῆς χώρας αὐτῶν πρὸς ἡμᾶς, παράδοτε αὐτοὺς Σίμωνι τῷ ἀρχιερεῖ, ὅπως ἐκδικήσῃ ἐν αὐτοῖς κατὰ τὸν νόμον αὐτῶν». -

²²Καὶ τὰ αὐτὰ ἔγραψε Δημητρίῳ τῷ βασιλεῖ καὶ ᾿Αττάλῳ, ᾿Αριαράθῃ καὶ ᾿Αρσάκῃ

²³καὶ εἰς πάσας τὰς χώρας καὶ Σαμψάμῃ καὶ Σπαρτιάταις καὶ εἰς Δῆλον καὶ Μύνδον καὶ Σικυῶνα καὶ εἰς τὴν Καρίαν καὶ εἰς Σάμον καὶ εἰς τὴν Παμφυλίαν καὶ εἰς τὴν Λυκίαν καὶ εἰς ῾Αλικαρνασσὸν καὶ εἰς Ῥόδον καὶ εἰς Φασηλίδα καὶ εἰς Κῶ καὶ εἰς Σίδην καὶ εἰς ῎Αραδον καὶ εἰς Γόρτυναν καὶ Κνίδον καὶ Κύπρον καὶ Κυρήνην.

²⁴τὸ δὲ ἀντίγραφον αὐτῶν ἔγραψαν Σίμωνι τῷ ἀρχιερεῖ.

²⁵᾿Αντίοχος δὲ ὁ βασιλεὺς παρενέβαλεν ἐπὶ Δωρᾶ ἐν τῇ δευτέρᾳ, προσάγων διὰ παντὸς αὐτῇ τὰς χεῖρας καὶ μηχανὰς ποιούμενος καὶ συνέκλεισε τὸν Τρύφωνα τοῦ μὴ εἰσπορεύεσθαι καὶ ἐκπορεύεσθαι.

²⁶καὶ ἀπέστειλεν αὐτῷ Σίμων δισχιλίους ἄνδρας ἐκλεκτοὺς συμμαχῆσαι αὐτῷ καὶ ἀργύριον καὶ χρυσίον καὶ σκεύη ἱκανά.

²⁷καὶ οὐκ ἠβούλετο αὐτὰ δέξασθαι, ἀλλ᾿ ἠθέτησε πάντα, ὅσα συνέθετο αὐτῷ τὸ πρότερον, καὶ ἠλλοτριοῦντο αὐτῷ.

²⁸καὶ ἀπέστειλε πρὸς αὐτὸν ᾿Αθηνόβιον ἕνα τῶν φίλων αὐτοῦ κοινολογησάμενον αὐτῷ λέγων· ὑμεῖς κατακρατεῖτε τῆς ᾿Ιόππης καὶ Γαζάρων καὶ τῆς ἄκρας τῆς ἐν ῾Ιερουσαλήμ, πόλεις τῆς βασιλείας μου.

²⁹τὰ ὅρια αὐτῶν ἠρημώσατε καὶ ἐποιήσατε πληγὴν μεγάλην ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς καὶ ἐκυριεύσατε τόπων πολλῶν ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ μου.

³⁰νῦν οὖν παράδοτε τὰς πόλεις, ἃς κατελάβεσθε, καὶ τοὺς φόρους τῶν τόπων, ὧν κατεκυριεύσατε ἐκτὸς τῶν ὁρίων τῆς ᾿Ιουδαίας.

³¹εἰ δὲ μή, δότε ἀντ᾿ αὐτῶν πεντακόσια τάλαντα ἀργυρίου καὶ τῆς καταφθορᾶς, ἧς κατεφθάρκατε, καὶ τῶν φόρων τῶν πόλεων ἄλλα τάλαντα πεντακόσια· εἰ δὲ μή, παραγενόμενοι ἐκπολεμήσομεν ὑμᾶς.

³²καὶ ἦλθεν ᾿Αθηνόβιος φίλος τοῦ βασιλέως εἰς ῾Ιερουσαλὴμ καὶ εἶδε τὴν δόξαν Σίμωνος καὶ κυλικεῖον μετὰ χρυσωμάτων καὶ ἀργυρωμάτων καὶ παράστασιν ἱκανὴν καὶ ἐξίστατο καὶ ἀπήγγειλεν αὐτῶ τοὺς λόγους τοῦ βασιλέως.

³³καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς Σίμων εἶπεν αὐτῷ· οὔτε γῆν ἀλλοτρίαν εἰλήφαμεν οὔτε ἀλλοτρίων κεκρατήκαμεν, ἀλλὰ τῆς κληρονομίας τῶν πατέρων ἡμῶν, ὑπὸ δὲ ἐχθρῶν ἡμῶν ἔν τινι καιρῷ ἀκρίτως κατεκρατήθη·

³⁴ἡμεῖς δὲ καιρὸν ἔχοντες ἀντεχόμεθα τῆς κληρονομίας τῶν πατέρων ἡμῶν.

³⁵περὶ δὲ ᾿Ιόππης καὶ Γαζάρων, ὧν αἰτεῖς, αὗται ἐποίουν ἐν τῷ λαῷ πληγὴν μεγάλην κατὰ τὴν χώραν ἡμῶν, τούτων δώσομεν τάλαντα ἑκατόν. καὶ οὐκ ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ ᾿Αθηνόβιος λόγον,

³⁶ἀπέστρεψε δὲ μετὰ θυμοῦ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα καὶ ἀπήγγειλεν αὐτῷ τοὺς λόγους τούτους καὶ τὴν δόξαν Σίμωνος καὶ πάντα, ὅσα εἶδε, καὶ ὠργίσθη ὁ βασιλεὺς ὀργὴν μεγάλην.

³⁷Τρύφων δὲ ἐμβὰς εἰς πλοῖον ἔφυγεν εἰς ᾿Ορθωσιάδα.

³⁸καὶ κατέστησεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τὸν Κενδεβαῖον στρατηγὸν τῆς παραλίας καὶ δυνάμεις πεζικὰς καὶ ἱππικὰς ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ·

³⁹καὶ ἐνετείλατο αὐτῷ παρεμβαλεῖν κατὰ πρόσωπον τῆς ᾿Ιουδαίας καὶ ἐνετείλατο αὐτῷ οἰκοδομῆσαι τὴν Κεδρὼν καὶ ὀχυρῶσαι τὰς πύλας καὶ ὅπως πολεμήσῃ τὸν λαόν· ὁ δὲ βασιλεὺς ἐδίωκε τὸν Τρύφωνα.

⁴⁰καὶ παρεγενήθη Κενδεβαῖος εἰς ᾿Ιάμνειαν καὶ ἤρξατο τοῦ ἐρεθίζειν τὸν λαὸν καὶ ἐμβατεύειν εἰς τὴν ᾿Ιουδαίαν καὶ αἰχμαλωτίζειν τὸν λαὸν καὶ φονεύειν,

⁴¹καὶ ᾠκοδόμησε τὴν Κεδρὼν καὶ ἔταξεν ἐκεῖ ἱππεῖς καὶ δυνάμεις, ὅπως ἐκπορευόμενοι ἐξοδεύωσι τὰς ὁδοὺς τῆς ᾿Ιουδαίας, καθὰ συνέταξεν αὐτῷ ὁ βασιλεύς.

¹Moreover Antiochus son of Demetrius the king sent letters from the isles of the sea unto Simon the priest and prince of the Jews, and to all the people;

²The contents whereof were these: King Antiochus to Simon the high priest and prince of his nation, and to the people of the Jews, greeting:

³Forasmuch as certain pestilent men have usurped the kingdom of our fathers, and my purpose is to challenge it again, that I may restore it to the old estate, and to that end have gathered a multitude of foreign soldiers together, and prepared ships of war;

⁴My meaning also being to go through the country, that I may be avenged of them that have destroyed it, and made many cities in the kingdom desolate:

⁵Now therefore I confirm unto thee all the oblations which the kings before me granted thee, and whatsoever gifts besides they granted.

⁶I give thee leave also to coin money for thy country with thine own stamp.

⁷And as concerning Jerusalem and the sanctuary, let them be free; and all the armour that thou hast made, and fortresses that thou hast built, and keepest in thine hands, let them remain unto thee.

⁸And if anything be, or shall be, owing to the king, let it be forgiven thee from this time forth for evermore.

⁹Furthermore, when we have obtained our kingdom, we will honour thee, and thy nation, and thy temple, with great honour, so that your honour shall be known throughout the world.

¹⁰In the hundred threescore and fourteenth year went Antiochus into the land of his fathers: at which time all the forces came together unto him, so that few were left with Tryphon.

¹¹Wherefore being pursued by king Antiochus, he fled unto Dora, which lieth by the sea side:

¹²For he saw that troubles came upon him all at once, and that his forces had forsaken him.

¹³Then camped Antiochus against Dora, having with him an hundred and twenty thousand men of war, and eight thousand horsemen.

¹⁴And when he had compassed the city round about, and joined ships close to the town on the sea side, he vexed the city by land and by sea, neither suffered he any to go out or in.

¹⁵In the mean season came Numenius and his company from Rome, having letters to the kings and countries; wherein were written these things:

¹⁶Lucius, consul of the Romans unto king Ptolemee, greeting:

¹⁷The Jews’ ambassadors, our friends and confederates, came unto us to renew the old friendship and league, being sent from Simon the high priest, and from the people of the Jews:

¹⁸And they brought a shield of gold of a thousand pound.

¹⁹We thought it good therefore to write unto the kings and countries, that they should do them no harm, nor fight against them, their cities, or countries, nor yet aid their enemies against them.

²⁰It seemed also good to us to receive the shield of them.

²¹If therefore there be any pestilent fellows, that have fled from their country unto you, deliver them unto Simon the high priest, that he may punish them according to their own law.

²²The same things wrote he likewise unto Demetrius the king, and Attalus, to Ariarathes, and Arsaces,

²³And to all the countries and to Sampsames, and the Lacedemonians, and to Delus, and Myndus, and Sicyon, and Caria, and Samos, and Pamphylia, and Lycia, and Halicarnassus, and Rhodus, and Aradus, and Cos, and Side, and Aradus, and Gortyna, and Cnidus, and Cyprus, and Cyrene.

²⁴And the copy hereof they wrote to Simon the high priest.

²⁵So Antiochus the king camped against Dora the second day, assaulting it continually, and making engines, by which means he shut up Tryphon, that he could neither go out nor in.

²⁶At that time Simon sent him two thousand chosen men to aid him; silver also, and gold, and much armour.

²⁷Nevertheless he would not receive them, but brake all the covenants which he had made with him afore, and became strange unto him.

²⁸Furthermore he sent unto him Athenobius, one of his friends, to commune with him, and say, Ye withhold Joppa and Gazera; with the tower that is in Jerusalem, which are cities of my realm.

²⁹The borders thereof ye have wasted, and done great hurt in the land, and got the dominion of many places within my kingdom.

³⁰Now therefore deliver the cities which ye have taken, and the tributes of the places, whereof ye have gotten dominion without the borders of Judea:

³¹Or else give me for them five hundred talents of silver; and for the harm that ye have done, and the tributes of the cities, other five hundred talents: if not, we will come and fight against you

³²So Athenobius the king’s friend came to Jerusalem: and when he saw the glory of Simon, and the cupboard of gold and silver plate, and his great attendance, he was astonished, and told him the king’s message.

³³Then answered Simon, and said unto him, We have neither taken other men’s land, nor holden that which appertaineth to others, but the inheritance of our fathers, which our enemies had wrongfully in possession a certain time.

³⁴Wherefore we, having opportunity, hold the inheritance of our fathers.

³⁵And whereas thou demandest Joppa and Gazera, albeit they did great harm unto the people in our country, yet will we give thee an hundred talents for them. Hereunto Athenobius answered him not a word;

³⁶But returned in a rage to the king, and made report unto him of these speeches, and of the glory of Simon, and of all that he had seen: whereupon the king was exceeding wroth.

³⁷In the mean time fled Tryphon by ship unto Orthosias.

³⁸Then the king made Cendebeus captain of the sea coast, and gave him an host of footmen and horsemen,

³⁹And commanded him to remove his host toward Judea; also he commanded him to build up Cedron, and to fortify the gates, and to war against the people; but as for the king himself, he pursued Tryphon.

⁴⁰So Cendebeus came to Jamnia and began to provoke the people and to invade Judea, and to take the people prisoners, and slay them.

⁴¹And when he had built up Cedron, he set horsemen there, and an host of footmen, to the end that issuing out they might make outroads upon the ways of Judea, as the king had commanded him.
