¹Ve bir karşıt güç İsrail'e karşı durdu ve İsrail halkını sayması için Davut'u harekete geçirdi.

²Kral Davut, Yoav'a ve ordunun komutanlarına, "Gidin, Beer-Şeva'dan Dan'a kadar İsrail'i sayın ve sonucu bana getirin ki onların sayısını bileyim" dedi.

³Yoav şöyle yanıtladı: "RAB halkını şimdikinden yüz kat daha çoğaltsın ve efendim kralın gözleri bunu görsün! Onların hepsi zaten efendimin kulları değil mi? Efendim neden bunu istiyor? Neden bu iş İsrail için bir günaha dönüşsün?"

⁴Ancak kralın buyruğu Yoav'a üstün geldi. Böylece Yoav yola çıkıp bütün İsrail'i dolaştı ve Yeruşalim'e döndü.

⁹RAB, Davut'un görücüsü Gad'a şöyle seslendi:

¹¹Gad Davut'a gidip şöyle dedi: "RAB şöyle diyor: 'Kendine seç:

¹²Ya üç yıl kıtlık, ya düşmanlarının kılıcı seni yok etmek üzere peşindeyken üç ay boyunca düşmanlarının önünden kaçmak, ya da üç gün boyunca RAB'bin kılıcının, yani ölümün ülkede esmesi ve RAB'bin meleğinin bütün İsrail topraklarında yıkım getirmesi. Şimdi beni gönderene ne yanıt götüreceğimi düşün.'"

¹³Davut Gad'a, "Üç seçenek de benim için son derece sıkıntılı," dedi, "İnsan eline düşmektense, RAB'bin eline düşeyim; çünkü O'nun merhameti çok büyüktür. Ama insan eline düşmeyeyim."

¹⁴Bunun üzerine RAB İsrail'e ölüm gönderdi ve İsrail'den yetmiş bin erkek öldü.

¹⁶Davut gözlerini kaldırıp bakınca, RAB'bin meleğinin yerle gök arasında durduğunu gördü; elinde Yeruşalim'in üzerine uzatılmış yalın bir kılıç vardı. Bunun üzerine çul kuşanmış olan Davut ile halkın ileri gelenleri yüzüstü yere kapandılar.

¹⁷Davut Tanrı'ya şöyle dedi: "Halkın sayılmasını buyuran ben değil miydim? Günah işleyen, kötülük yaparak bu kötülüğü yapan benim. Bu koyunlar ne yaptı ki? Ey Tanrım RAB, ne olur senin elin bana ve babamın evine yönelsin; ama bu yıkım senin halkının üzerine gelmesin, ya RAB!"

¹⁸RAB'bin meleği Gad'a, Davut'un yukarı çıkıp Yevuslu Orna'nın harman yerinde RAB'be bir sunak kurmasını söylemesini buyurdu.

¹⁹Davut, Gad'ın RAB'bin adıyla söylediği söz uyarınca yukarı çıktı.

²⁰Orna arkasına dönüp kralı gördü; yanındaki dört oğlu da onunla birlikte gizlendiler. Orna o sırada buğday dövüyordu.

²¹Davut Orna'ya doğru ilerledi. Orna harman yerinden çıkıp Davut'un önünde yüzüstü yere kapandı.

²²Davut Orna'ya, "Harman yerini bana ver ki orada RAB'be bir sunak kurayım," dedi, "Halkın üzerindeki salgın felaket dursun diye burayı bana tam değeri karşılığında gümüşle ver."

²³Orna Davut'a, "Al senin olsun!" dedi, "Efendim kral gözünde iyi olanı yapsın. İşte, yakmalık sunu için öküzleri, odun için sabanları, sunu için de buğdayı veriyorum; hepsini veriyorum."

²⁴Ama Kral Davut Orna'ya, "Hayır, kesinlikle tam değerini gümüşle ödeyip satın alacağım," dedi, "Çünkü senin olanı RAB için almam ve O'na karşılıksız yakmalık sunu sunmam."

²⁵Böylece Davut o yer için Orna'ya altı yüz altın şikel ağırlığında ödeme yaptı.

²⁶Davut orada RAB'be bir sunak kurup yakmalık sunular ve esenlik sunuları sundu. RAB'ye yakardı; RAB de yakmalık sunu sunağının üzerine gökten ateş indirerek onu yanıtladı ve yakmalık sunuyu yakıp kül etti.

²⁷RAB meleğe buyruk verdi, melek de kılıcını kınına koydu.

²⁸Davut, RAB'bin Yevuslu Orna'nın harman yerinde kendisini yanıtladığını görünce, o dönemde orada kurbanlar sunmaya başladı.

²⁹Musa'nın çölde yaptığı RAB'bin Konutu ve yakmalık sunu sunağı o sırada Gibeon'daki yüksek yerde bulunuyordu.

³⁰Ancak Davut, Tanrı'ya danışmak için o sunağın önüne gidemiyordu; çünkü RAB'bin meleğinin kılıcından dehşete düşmüştü.

¹ΚΑΙ ἔστη διάβολος ἐν τῷ ᾿Ισραὴλ καὶ ἐπέσεισε τὸν Δαυὶδ τοῦ ἀριθμῆσαι τὸν ᾿Ισραήλ.

²καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Δαυὶδ πρὸς ᾿Ιωὰβ καὶ πρὸς τοὺς ἄρχοντας τῆς δυνάμεως· πορεύθητε, ἀριθμήσατε τὸν ᾿Ισραὴλ ἀπὸ Βηρσαβεὲ καὶ ἕως Δὰν καὶ ἐνέγκατε πρός με, καὶ γνώσομαι τὸν ἀριθμὸν αὐτῶν.

³καὶ εἶπεν ᾿Ιωάβ· προσθείη Κύριος ἐπὶ τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ, ὡς αὐτοὶ ἑκατονταπλασίως, καὶ οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ τοῦ κυρίου μου τοῦ βασιλέως βλέποντες· πάντες τῷ κυρίῳ μου παῖδες· ἱνατί ζητεῖ κύριός μου τοῦτο; ἵνα μὴ γένηται εἰς ἁμαρτίαν τῷ ᾿Ισραήλ.

⁴τὸ δὲ ῥῆμα τοῦ βασιλέως ἴσχυσεν ἐπὶ ᾿Ιωάβ, καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ᾿Ιωὰβ καὶ διῆλθεν ἐν παντὶ ᾿Ισραὴλ καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς ῾Ιερουσαλήμ.

⁵καὶ ἔδωκεν ᾿Ιωὰβ τὸν ἀριθμὸν τῆς ἐπισκέψεως τοῦ λαοῦ τῷ Δαυίδ, καὶ ἦν πᾶς ᾿Ισραὴλ χίλιαι χιλιάδες καὶ ἑκατὸν χιλιάδες ἀνδρῶν ἐσπασμένων μάχαιραν καὶ υἱοὶ ᾿Ιούδα τετρακόσιαι καὶ ἑβδομήκοντα χιλιάδες ἀνδρῶν ἐσπασμένων μάχαιραν.

⁶καὶ τὸν Λευὶ καὶ τὸν Βενιαμὶν οὐκ ἠρίθμησεν ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῶν, ὅτι κατίσχυσε λόγος τοῦ βασιλέως τὸν ᾿Ιωάβ.

⁷καὶ πονηρὸν ἐναντίον τοῦ Θεοῦ περὶ τοῦ πράγματος τούτου, καὶ ἐπάταξε τὸν ᾿Ισραήλ.

⁸καὶ εἶπε Δαυὶδ πρὸς τὸν Θεόν· ἡμάρτηκα σφόδρα, ὅτι ἐποίησα τὸ πρᾶγμα τοῦτο· καὶ νῦν περίελε δὴ τὴν κακίαν παιδός σου, ὅτι ἐματαιώθην σφόδρα.

⁹καὶ ἐλάλησε Κύριος πρὸς Γὰδ τὸν ὁρῶντα λέγων·

¹⁰πορεύου καὶ λάλησον πρὸς Δαυὶδ λέγων· οὕτω λέγει Κύριος· τρία αἱρῶ ἐγὼ ἐπὶ σέ, ἔκλεξαι σεαυτῷ ἓν ἐξ αὐτῶν καὶ ποιήσω σοι.

¹¹καὶ ἦλθε Γὰδ πρὸς Δαυὶδ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· οὕτως λέγει Κύριος· ἔκλεξαι σεαυτῷ

¹²ἢ τρία ἔτη λιμοῦ, ἢ τρεῖς μῆνας φεύγειν σε ἐκ προσώπου ἐχθρῶν σου καὶ μάχαιραν ἐχθρῶν σου τοῦ ἐξολοθρεῦσαι, ἢ τρεῖς ἡμέρας ρομφαίαν Κυρίου καὶ θάνατον ἐν τῇ γῇ καὶ ἄγγελος Κυρίου ἐξολοθρεύων ἐν πάσῃ κληρονομίᾳ ᾿Ισραήλ· καὶ νῦν ἰδὲ τί ἀποκριθῶ τῷ ἀποστείλαντί με λόγον.

¹³καὶ εἶπε Δαυὶδ πρὸς Γάδ· στενά μοι καὶ τὰ τρία σφόδρα· ἐμπεσοῦμαι δὴ εἰς χεῖρας Κυρίου, ὅτι πολλοὶ οἱ οἰκτιρμοὶ αὐτοῦ σφόδρα, καὶ εἰς χεῖρας ἀνθρώπων οὐ μὴ ἐμπέσω.

¹⁴καὶ ἔδωκε Κύριος θάνατον ἐν ᾿Ισραήλ, καὶ ἔπεσον ἐξ ᾿Ισραὴλ ἑβδομήκοντα χιλιάδες ἀνδρῶν.

¹⁵καὶ ἀπέστειλεν ὁ Θεὸς ἄγγελον εἰς ῾Ιερουσαλὴμ τοῦ ἐξολοθρεῦσαι αὐτήν. καὶ ὡς ἐξωλόθρευσεν, εἶδε Κύριος καὶ μετεμελήθη ἐπὶ τῇ κακίᾳ καὶ εἶπε τῷ ἀγγέλῳ τῷ ἐξολοθρεύοντι· ἱκανούσθω σοι, ἄνες τὴν χεῖρά σου· καὶ ὁ ἄγγελος Κυρίου ἑστὼς ἐν τῷ ἅλῳ ᾿Ορνὰ τοῦ ᾿Ιεβουσαίου.

¹⁶καὶ ἐπῇρε Δαυὶδ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶδε τὸν ἄγγελον Κυρίου ἑστῶτα ἀνὰ μέσον τῆς γῆς καὶ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ, καὶ ἡ ρομφαία αὐτοῦ ἐσπασμένη ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ ἐκτεταμένη ἐπὶ ῾Ιερουσαλήμ· καὶ ἔπεσε Δαυὶδ καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι περιβεβλημένοι ἐν σάκκοις ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτῶν.

¹⁷καὶ εἶπε Δαυὶδ πρὸς τὸν Θεόν· οὐκ ἐγὼ εἶπα τοῦ ἀριθμῆσαι ἐν τῷ λαῷ; καὶ ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ἁμαρτών, κακοποιῶν ἐκακοποίησα, καὶ ταῦτα τὰ πρόβατα τί ἐποίησαν; Κύριε ὁ Θεός, γενηθήτω ἡ χείρ σου ἐν ἐμοὶ καὶ ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ τοῦ πατρός μου καὶ μὴ ἐν τῷ λαῷ σου εἰς ἀπώλειαν, Κύριε.

¹⁸καὶ ἄγγελος Κυρίου εἶπε τῷ Γὰδ τοῦ εἰπεῖν πρὸς Δαυίδ, ἵνα ἀναβῇ τοῦ στῆσαι θυσιαστήριον Κυρίῳ ἐν ἅλῳ ᾿Ορνὰ τοῦ ᾿Ιεβουσαίου.

¹⁹καὶ ἀνέβη Δαυὶδ κατὰ τὸν λόγον Γάδ, ὃν ἐλάλησεν ἐν ὀνόματι Κυρίου.

²⁰καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν ᾿Ορνὰ καὶ εἶδε τὸν βασιλέα καὶ τέσσαρας υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ μεθαχαβίν· καὶ ᾿Ορνὰ ἦν ἁλοῶν πυρούς.

²¹καὶ ἦλθε Δαυὶδ πρὸς ᾿Ορνά, καὶ ᾿Ορνὰ ἐξῆλθεν ἐκ τῆς ἅλω καὶ προσεκύνησε τῷ Δαυὶδ τῷ προσώπῳ ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν.

²²καὶ εἶπε Δαυὶδ πρὸς ᾿Ορνά· δός μοι τὸν τόπον σου τῆς ἅλω, καὶ οἰκοδομήσω ἐπ᾿ αὐτῷ θυσιαστήριον τῷ Κυρίῳ· ἐν ἀργυρίῳ ἀξίῳ δός μοι αὐτόν, καὶ παύσεται ἡ πληγὴ ἐκ τοῦ λαοῦ.

²³καὶ εἶπεν ᾿Ορνὰ πρὸς Δαυίδ· λαβὲ σεαυτῷ, καὶ ποιησάτω ὁ κύριός μου ὁ βασιλεὺς τὸ ἀγαθὸν ἐναντίον ἑαυτοῦ· ἰδὲ δέδωκα τοὺς μόσχους εἰς ὁλοκαύτωσιν καὶ τὸ ἄροτρον εἰς ξύλα καὶ τὸν σῖτον εἰς θυσίαν, τὰ πάντα δέδωκα.

²⁴καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Δαυὶδ τῷ ᾿Ορνά· οὐχί, ὅτι ἀγοράζων ἀγοράσω ἐν ἀργυρίῳ ἀξίῳ, ὅτι οὐ μὴ λάβω ἅ ἐστί σοι Κυρίῳ τοῦ ἀνανέγκαι ὁλοκαύτωσιν δωρεὰν Κυρίῳ.

²⁵καὶ ἔδωκε Δαυὶδ τῷ ᾿Ορνὰ ἐν τῷ τόπῳ αὐτοῦ σίκλους χρυσίου ὁλκῆς ἑξακοσίους.

²⁶καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν ἐκεῖ Δαυὶδ θυσιαστήριον Κυρίῳ καὶ ἀνήνεγκεν ὁλοκαυτώματα καὶ σωτηρίου· καὶ ἐβόησε πρὸς Κύριον, καὶ ἐπήκουσεν αὐτῷ ἐν πυρὶ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον τῆς ὁλοκαυτώσεως καὶ κατηνάλωσε τὴν ὁλοκαύτωσιν.

²⁷καὶ εἶπε Κύριος πρὸς τὸν ἄγγελον, καὶ κατέθηκε τὴν ρομφαίαν εἰς τὸν κολεὸν αὐτῆς.

²⁸ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ ἐν τῷ ἰδεῖν τὸν Δαυὶδ ὅτι ἐπήκουσεν αὐτῷ Κύριος ἐν ἅλῳ ᾿Ορνὰ τοῦ ᾿Ιεβουσαίου, καὶ ἐθυσίασεν ἐκεῖ.

²⁹καὶ σκηνὴ Κυρίου, ἣν ἐποίησε Μωυσῆς ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, καὶ θυσιαστήριον τῶν ὁλοκαυτωμάτων ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ ἐν Βαμὰ ἐν Γαβαών·

³⁰καὶ οὐκ ἐδύνατο Δαυὶδ τοῦ πορευθῆναι ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ τοῦ ζητῆσαι τὸν Θεόν, ὅτι οὐ κατέσπευσεν ἀπὸ προσώπου τῆς ρομφαίας ἀγγέλου Κυρίου.

¹And the devil stood up against Israel, and moved David to number Israel.

²And king David said to Joab and to the captains of the forces, Go, number Israel from Bersabee even to Dan, and bring me [the account], and I shall know their number.

³And Joab said, May the Lord add to his people, a hundred-fold as many as they [are], and [let] the eyes of my lord the king see [it]: all [are] the servants of my lord. Why does my lord seek this thing? [do it not], lest it become a sin to Israel.

⁴Nevertheless the king’s word prevailed against Joab; and Joab went out and passed through all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.

⁵And Joab gave the number of the mustering of the people to David: and all Israel was a million and a hundred thousand men that drew sword: and the sons of Juda [were] four hundred and seventy thousand men that drew sword.

⁶But he numbered not Levi and Benjamin among them; for the word of the king was painful to Joab.

⁷And [there was] evil in the sight of the Lord respecting this thing; and he smote Israel.

⁸And David said to God, I have sinned exceedingly, in that I have done this thing: and now, I pray thee, remove the sin of thy servant; for I have been exceedingly foolish.

⁹And the Lord spoke to Gad the seer, saying,

¹⁰Go and speak to David, saying, Thus saith the Lord, I bring three things upon thee: choose one of them for thyself, and I will do it to thee.

¹¹And Gad came to David, and said to him, thus saith the Lord, Choose for thyself,

¹²either three years of famine, or that thou shouldest flee three months from the face of thine enemies, and the sword of thine enemies [shall be employed] to destroy thee, or that the sword of the Lord and pestilence [should be] three days in the land, and the angel of the Lord [shall be] destroying in all the inheritance of Israel. And now consider what I shall answer to him that sent the message.

¹³And David said to Gad, They are very hard for me, even [all] the three: let me fall now into the hands of the Lord, for his mercies [are] very abundant, and let me not fall by any means into the hands of man.

¹⁴So the Lord brought pestilence upon Israel: and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men.

¹⁵And God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the Lord saw, and repented for the evil, and said to the angel that was destroying, Let it suffice thee; withhold thine hand. And the angel of the Lord stood by the threshing-floor of Orna the Jebusite.

¹⁶And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the Lord, standing between the earth and the heaven, and his sword drawn in his hand, stretched out over Jerusalem: and David and the elders clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.

¹⁷And David said to God, [Was it] not I [that] gave orders to number the people? and I am the guilty one; I have greatly sinned: but these sheep, what have they done? O Lord God, let thy hand be upon me, and upon my father’s house, and not on thy people for destruction, O Lord!

¹⁸And the angel of the Lord told Gad to tell David, that he should go up to erect and altar to the Lord, in the threshing-floor of Orna the Jebusite.

¹⁹And David went up according to the word of Gad, which he spoke in the name of the Lord.

²⁰And Orna turned and saw the king; and he hid himself and his four sons with him. Now Orna was threshing wheat.

²¹And David came to Orna; and Orna came forth from the threshing-floor, and did obeisance to David wit his face to the ground.

²²And David said to Orna, Give me thy place of the threshing-floor, and I will build upon it an altar to the Lord: give it me for its worth in money, and the plague shall cease from [among] the people.

²³And Orna said to David, Take it to thyself, and let my lord the king do what is right in his eyes: see, I have given the calves for a whole-burnt-offering, and the plough for wood, and the corn for a meat-offering; I have given all.

²⁴And king David said to Orna, Nay; for I will surely buy it for its worth in money: for I will not take thy property for the Lord, to offer a whole-burnt-offering to the Lord without cost [to myself].

²⁵And David gave to Orna for his place six hundred shekels of gold [by] weight.

²⁶And David built there an altar to the Lord, and offered up whole-burnt-offerings and peace-offerings: and he cried to the Lord, and he answered him by fire out of heaven on the altar of whole-burnt-offerings, and [it] consumed the whole-burnt-offering.

²⁷And the Lord spoke to the angel; and he put up the sword into its sheath.

²⁸At that time when David saw that the Lord answered him in the threshing-floor of Orna the Jebusite, he also sacrificed there.

²⁹And the tabernacle of the Lord which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of whole-burnt-offerings, [were] at that time in the high place at Gabaon.

³⁰And David could not go before it to enquire of God; for he hasted not because of the sword of the angel of the Lord.
